RENNES, France -- Police said a mental patient killed seven people, including his father and uncle, and wounded five more in a shooting spree in northern Brittany on Wednesday.

Guy Martel, 41, a former teacher, was captured in the town of Evran. Police said the gunman killed or wounded people there and in six other towns. One of the dead was a doctor Martel had sought out for care, police said.

Authorities said Martel, reportedly armed with a .22-caliber rifle, did not resist arrest.

Police said Martel had been under treatment for mental problems for the past year in a hospital near Rennes. There was no immediate explanation how he left the hospital or acquired the rifle.
